Economics of Civil Conflict: Evidence from the Punjab Insurgency
نویسنده
چکیده
The article reviews the economic causes and consequences of the civil conflict in Punjab (1978-1993). Based on the rationalist strand of the literature, commitment problems and issue indivisibilities were proximate causes for the rise of the Punjab insurgency. During the insurgency, agricultural growth and incomes suffered and large numbers of cultivators became unemployed. While smaller cultivators may have been hindered by a decline in productivity, the richer farmers appear to have been affected more by the insurgency. They reduced their long-term investment but did not change their short-term investment decisions. There were larger negative developmental effects on labor spending and education. There was less spending on permanent labor and on longer-term contracts in agriculture. The insurgency not only affected agricultural growth and the economic lives of those engaged in agriculture but also had wide-ranging impacts on human capital accumulation. The conflict led to distortions within households on educational spending. Due to a prevailing gender bias, the conflict exacerbated the educational gap between girls and boys. ________________________________________________________________

The Maoist insurgency in Nepal is one of the highest intensity internal conflicts in recent times. Investigation into the causes of the conflict would suggest that grievance rather than greed is the main motivating force. The concept of horizontal or inter-group inequality, with both an ethnic and caste dimension, is highly relevant in explaining the Nepalese civil war. There is also a spatial ...
متن کاملThe Hobbesian Notion of Self-Preservation Concerning Human Behavior during an Insurgency
S cholars generally reference Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan for theories in international politics. Specifically, scholars subscribe to the concept of international anarchy and the pursuit of survival to explain state behavior. Since Hobbes lived through the English Civil War (1642-1651), his observations arguably could be a reflection of insurgency warfare rather than interstate conflict. In fact,...
متن کاملIslamist insurgency and the war against polio: a cross-national analysis of the political determinants of polio
BACKGROUND There is widespread agreement that civil war obstructs efforts to eradicate polio. It is suggested that Islamist insurgents have a particularly negative effect on vaccination programmes, but this claim is controversial. METHODS We analyse cross-national data for the period 2003-14 using negative binomial regressions to investigate the relationship between Islamist and non-Islamist ...
متن کاملRenewable Natural Resource Shocks and Conflict Intensity: Findings from India’s Ongoing Maoist Insurgency
An interesting stream of the civil conflict literature has identified an important subset of civil conflicts with disastrous consequences, that is, those that emerge as a consequence of shocks to renewable natural resources like land and water. This literature is, however, reliant on qualitative case studies when claiming a causal relationship leading from renewable resource shocks to conflict....
